On the 20th of April 2011, the Senate of the University of Warsaw, having pondered the favourable opinions on the matter provided by Prof. Eva Cantarella (Università degli Studi di Milano), Prof. Roger Bagnall (New York University) and Prof. Hans-Albert Rupprecht (Phillips-Universität Marburg), unanimously approved the motion of the Faculty of History, supported by the Faculty of Law and Administration to renew Joseph Mélèze Modrzejewski’s doctoral degree. The ceremony shall take place at noon, on the 6th of June 2011.
Joseph Mélèze Modrzejewski was born in Lublin on the 8th of March 1930. In 1957, having graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration, he presented at the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw a doctoral dissertation prepared under the guidance of one of the founding-fathers of juristic papyrology, Prof. Raphael Taubenschlag. From 1959 he has been living in France where he worked at CNRS in Paris and later was professor at Sorbonne and Université Paris-II. He taught there legal and social history of the Hellenistic world. From 1972 he held a seminar on juristic papyrology and history of the Law in Antiquity at the newly created École pratique des Hautes Études (IVe Section, Sciences historiques et philologiques), and from 1979 to 2011 lectured on history of Judaism at the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw at the Free University of Brussels. He has authored more than 350 books, articles, essays and reviews presenting the legal and social history of Antiquity, foremost of the Graeco-roman Egypt in the light of the papyrological sources as well as history of Judaism since the Era of the Second Temple. He is one of the most distinguished law historians, experts on Antiquity since the Alexander the Great’s Conquest till Byzantine times, a teacher of generation of scholars specializing in various fields of Ancient History: some of his students are presently staff of the University of Warsaw. Member of Polish Academy of Science, Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, Athenian Academy, Knight of Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
The ceremony shall be followed by a presentation of the newest book by Prof. Modrzejewski: Le droit et Justice dans le monde grec et hellenistique, published as Supplement X to The Journal of Juristic Papyrology, review jointly edited by the University of Warsaw Chair of Roman Law and the Law of Antiquity of the Institute of Legal History, Faculty of Law and Administration, and Department of Papyrology of the Institute of Archaeology, Faculty of History.
